A recent audit conducted by Health and Community Services (HCS) has uncovered some alarming findings. According to a news article published by Channel 103, more than 170 Jersey residents who were prescribed biologic medication for rheumatology conditions did not meet the criteria to start the therapy. Additionally, the audit revealed a lack of evidence to confirm the accuracy of first diagnoses for three in ten patients.
These findings are concerning and highlight some serious issues within the rheumatology service, which has given rise to potential clinical negligence claims. Prescription errors can lead to health complications, or make an existing problem worse. For example, taking the wrong medication or dosage can result in adverse reactions or interactions with other medications. In some cases, it can even exacerbate the underlying condition or cause new health problems. This emphasises the gravity of these findings and the importance of ensuring that patients receive the correct medication.
Do you believe you have a clinical negligence claim against the Jersey Rheumatology Department?
Health Minister, Deputy Karen Wilson, acknowledged that there may be underlying issues that extend into other parts of HCS and emphasised the need to strengthen clinical governance and quality of care within the department.
In cases of clinical negligence, the Plaintiff (claimant) must prove that the healthcare professional or provider breached their duty of care and that this breach resulted in harm to the patient. Bringing a successful clinical negligence claim can be a complex process, requiring expert evidence to establish the standard of care and whether that standard of care was breached.
The recent audit conducted by HCS highlights some serious issues within the rheumatology service in Jersey. If you have been affected by mis-prescription of biologic medication, it is important to seek legal advice and explore your options for prescription error compensation.
